Australia built a strong position in the first men’s Test against South Africa at Kingsmead, Durban, following a heroic lower-order recovery led by Matthew Renshaw. Responding to Australia’s first-innings total of 390, South Africa reached 86 for two by the drinks break on day three, with David Bedingham and captain Temba Bavuma at the crease.
Australia initially struggled on day one, slipping to 124 for six on a surface expected to offer spin later in the match. However, Renshaw, batting at number five after a decade on the periphery of the national side, produced a career-defining innings of 190. Batted through two extended sessions, Renshaw combined patience and calculated risks against South Africa’s spin attack to lift the tourists into a dominant position before being the last man out shortly after tea on day two.
South Africa resumed day three at 27 for one after bad light curtailed play on the second evening. Early in the morning session, Aiden Markram and David Bedingham displayed disciplined intent, adding 50 runs for the second wicket to withstand a tight opening spell from Australian pace duo Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.
Markram played authoritatively off the front and back foot, hitting several boundaries off the seamers and welcoming spinner Nathan Lyon with an opening-ball boundary. Bedingham was equally fluent, striking back-to-back boundaries off Mitchell Starc to push South Africa’s total past the 80-run mark.
The partnership was broken in the 21st over when Starc, bowling from round the wicket, extracted awkward bounce to force an edge from Markram on 36. Renshaw took a sharp catch at first slip, handing Starc his 446th Test wicket and breaking the promising second-wicket stand.
Lyon also began generating noticeable turn from the pitch, troubling South Africa’s batters including incoming captain Temba Bavuma. With the pitch expected to turn increasingly as the match progresses, Australia’s bowling attack continues to press for further breakthroughs on a crucial day that could dictate the outcome of the series opener.
