Bally Bagayoko, the 53-year-old mayor of a working-class suburb near Paris, has emerged as a prominent and polarizing figure amidst widespread student demonstrations across France. His persistent presence at student rallies has drawn both fervent applause from supporters and sharp condemnation from political opponents.
During a student demonstration in eastern Paris this month, Mr. Bagayoko intervened directly as riot police officers pressed their shields against a group of young male protesters. Clad in a gray suit and lavender tie, the tall mayor stood between the police and the youths, spreading his arms wide to shield the protesters while shouting at officers to stop.
Mr. Bagayoko serves as the mayor of St.-Denis Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, one of the most populous and diverse suburban areas surrounding Paris. The municipality is widely known for housing a historic basilica and the national stadium, while simultaneously grappling with high rates of poverty and crime.
Over the past month, the mayor has become a household name throughout France as high school and university students began blockading educational institutions to demand better conditions. The ongoing student movement was set to be further amplified by planned nationwide rallies on Saturday.
Footage showcasing Mr. Bagayoko’s active participation at protest sites has circulated extensively on television news broadcasts and across social media platforms. Supporters have affectionately dubbed him “Spiderman,” referencing the comic-book superhero who has become a global symbol for youth-led protest movements.
Conversely, the mayor faces heavy criticism from political opponents, particularly right-wing politicians, who accuse him of inciting violence and have formally called for his removal from office. The backlash intensified after Mr. Bagayoko publicly remarked that “violence at some point can be legitimate,” though he added that “every time it can be avoided, that’s better.”
