Australian Independent Lawmaker Helen Haines Critical After Deliberate Car Attack

Australian independent lawmaker Helen Haines is in critical condition after being deliberately struck by a vehicle outside her office in Wangaratta on Monday, according to statements from police and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Victoria Police confirmed that a 43-year-old man was arrested following the attack on the 65-year-old Member of Parliament. Wangaratta is located approximately three hours’ drive northeast of Melbourne.

Following the incident, Haines was airlifted to a hospital for emergency medical treatment, Prime Minister Albanese disclosed during a press conference.

Speaking to reporters, Albanese expressed deep concern for the injured lawmaker. He stated that all thoughts were with Haines, her family, friends, team, and community during this extremely difficult time, adding that prayers were being offered for her full recovery.

Victoria Police Acting Superintendent Ashley Mason addressed a separate press conference to reassure the community, stating that there was no further ongoing threat to the public.

Prime Minister Albanese noted that it was too early to determine the motive behind the deliberate attack. However, he confirmed that a counter-terrorism taskforce would be involved in investigating the arrested suspect.

In a statement posted on Haines’ official Facebook page, her family expressed gratitude to members of the public and emergency responders. The family thanked bystanders for their swift assistance, as well as dedicated healthcare workers and police officers for their prompt response to the scene.
