A large and deadly fire has struck Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, leaving several people dead and numerous others injured, according to statements from Canadian officials and local authorities.
Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed the incident, describing the situation as “very, very active and delicate.” While he did not officially confirm the precise cause or exact casualty count, he noted that the Canadian military and local emergency teams were actively managing the blaze.
Canadian TV network Global News, citing unnamed military sources, reported that at least seven people were killed and dozens more were injured. The blast reportedly occurred when a gas line or gas well was struck during a live-fire military training exercise.
The fire erupted on Saturday and spread rapidly across the area, fueled by extreme wind gusts reaching up to 100 km/h (62 mph). According to the Municipal District of Wainwright, the fast-moving flames tore through the military base’s boundary fences before firefighters managed to contain the blaze.
Emergency medical systems across the region have been placed under severe strain. The Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton declared a “code orange” disaster response protocol to manage the incoming wave of patients. Emergency department physician Dr. Warren Thirsk described the situation as a major disaster that threatens to overwhelm local healthcare facilities.
Ambulances lined up outside the Wainwright Health Centre to transport victims. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his condolences, acknowledging a “serious incident creating a major fire” and stating his thoughts were with all affected personnel.
Bruce Pugh, mayor of the nearby town of Wainwright, called it a heavy day for the closely integrated community, noting that it could mark the area’s largest mass casualty event in history. Provincial leaders from Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia have mobilized resources and offered assistance to support the emergency response.
Canadian Forces Base Wainwright is one of Canada’s primary facilities for live-fire training exercises. On a typical day, the base houses approximately 690 military personnel and 300 civilian workers.
