Maulana Junaid Al Habib Likely to Be BNP Alliance Candidate for Brahmanbaria-2

Brahmanbaria Correspondent: Maulana Junaid Al Habib, Vice President of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh and Senior Joint Secretary General of Hefazat-e-Islam, is likely to be nominated as the joint candidate of the BNP and its allied parties for the Brahmanbaria-2 (Sarail–Ashuganj) constituency.
According to BNP sources, the party has shown a positive attitude toward leaving the seat for Maulana Habib, who has already been actively campaigning in the constituency for some time.
However, several BNP leaders are also seeking the party’s nomination from this seat. Among them are Barrister Rumeen Farhana, BNP’s Assistant International Affairs Secretary; Sheikh Md. Shamim, Central Committee Member; S.N. Tarun Dey, former Joint General Secretary of Jubo Dal; Shahjahan Siraj, President of Ashuganj Upazila BNP; Ahsan Uddin Khan Shipon, former Chhatra Dal leader; Dr. Nazmul Huda Biplob; Md. Anisul Islam Thakur, President of Sarail Upazila BNP; and Advocate Nuruzzaman Lasker Tapu, General Secretary of Sarail Upazila BNP.
Local political sources said that due to the redemarcation of constituency boundaries and recent decisions by the Election Commission, there is a mixed reaction among voters. Furthermore, the presence of a large number of BNP nomination seekers has created internal complications and coordination challenges within the party.
The Brahmanbaria-2 constituency has around 410,000 registered voters, and BNP candidates have won multiple times from this seat in the past. In the 2001 national election, the BNP left this constituency for its four-party alliance partner, the Islami Oikya Jote, whose candidate Mufti Fazlul Haque Amini was elected as a Member of Parliament.
Political analysts believe that in the upcoming general election, this seat could once again play a significant role in shaping the balance between religious and national politics in the region.
