A powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake has struck Russia’s eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering tsunami warnings across the Pacific region. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake was initially recorded at a magnitude of 8.7 but was later revised to 8.8.

The epicenter was located approximately 78 miles (126 kilometers) from the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a depth of 18 kilometers beneath the Earth's surface. The tremor was so intense that it shook vast areas of Kamchatka and raised immediate concerns of a potential tsunami.

Sergey Lebedev, the regional minister for emergency situations in Russia, confirmed that the earthquake generated tsunami waves ranging from three to four meters high along the Kamchatka coastline.

In response, tsunami warnings have been issued for Russia’s eastern seaboard, Japan’s coastal regions from Hokkaido to Kyushu, the entire western coast of the United States, as well as parts of Alaska’s remote Aleutian Islands, Guam, and the Hawaiian Islands.

In a video message, Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov said, “Today’s earthquake was extremely serious — one of the strongest tremors we have experienced in decades. All necessary measures are being taken to ensure public safety.”

Witnesses reported buildings shaking and residents fleeing to open areas in panic. As of now, no casualties or major structural damages have been officially reported.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have advised coastal residents to move to higher ground. Tsunami monitoring agencies around the world have increased surveillance of the Pacific Ocean basin in light of the threat.

A powerful earthquake struck eastern Russia, followed by three massive tsunami waves hitting the port town of Severo-Kurilsk, causing significant damage and panic among residents. According to Russia's state news agency TASS, the third wave was described as "extremely powerful."

The final tsunami wave damaged key infrastructure in the port area and dragged several anchored ships into the nearby strait. Parts of the town were flooded as a result of the surging waves.

In response to the emergency, local residents—around 2,000 people who live in the Severo-Kurilsk area—were evacuated to a nearby hilltop for safety. Authorities have advised them to remain there until the threat has completely subsided.

Earlier, the initial earthquake also caused structural damage in the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky region, including to a kindergarten building.

Emergency services have begun search, rescue, and relief operations, though no casualties have been reported so far. Tsunami warnings remain in effect for surrounding coastal areas as experts continue to monitor the situation.

Seismologists have called the event a serious warning for the region, urging heightened preparedness for natural disasters in this vulnerable part of Russia.

Just hours after claiming that Sheikh Hasina and her associates had committed crimes in Bangladesh more horrific than those of the Pakistani military in 1971, legal adviser Asif Nazrul has expressed regret.

Earlier today (Tuesday), he made the remarks during a discussion and exhibition focused on the July uprising and the demand for justice for killings that took place during that time. His comments triggered a wave of criticism on social media.

At 7:31 PM, Nazrul posted on his personal Facebook profile, saying, “It was inappropriate to compare the brutality of Sheikh Hasina with that of the Pakistani forces.” He later confirmed to BBC Bangla that the Facebook account belonged to him.

In his post, he wrote:
"Sheikh Hasina’s brutality is unbelievable. She ordered the burning of the dead and the wounded, the indiscriminate killing of women, teenagers, and children, the gunning down of civilians from helicopters, the execution of young people writhing in death agony, and the denial of medical care in hospitals leading to deliberate deaths."

He further stated that such actions would be considered serious crimes even in the context of war.

"However, it was wrong of me to compare her brutality with that of the Pakistani forces who committed atrocities against the people of Bangladesh in 1971. Both are heinous crimes. For those who thought I was downplaying the genocide of 1971, I sincerely apologize," wrote Professor Nazrul.

According to the Hamas-run Health Ministry, at least 112 people have been killed in Gaza over the past 24 hours. Since the beginning of the war, the total death toll has now exceeded 60,000.

Local hospitals report that many people were killed by Israeli airstrikes and gunfire while seeking humanitarian aid.

Al-Awda Hospital in the central Nuseirat area reported that at least 30 people were killed overnight and in morning attacks on residential homes. Among the victims were 14 women and 12 children.

At least 14 people were killed near a relief distribution center, and more than 100 others were injured.

In the coastal area of Al-Mawasi, four people were killed overnight in a tent where aid was being distributed. Israeli forces had reportedly paused attacks in the area for 10 hours during the day to facilitate aid delivery.

Hospital sources and eyewitnesses stated that nine more people were killed in Khan Younis. Al-Shifa Hospital reported this morning that two people were killed in a missile strike on an apartment building in Gaza City.

In a separate attack, five members of a single family were killed. Another strike has made it difficult for rescue workers to reach the wounded and recover the dead.

The BBC has requested information from the Israeli military regarding the casualty numbers but has not yet received a response.
