Powerful Earthquake Triggers Triple Tsunami in Russia’s Severo-Kurilsk
A powerful earthquake struck eastern Russia, followed by three massive tsunami waves hitting the port town of Severo-Kurilsk, causing significant damage and panic among residents. According to Russia’s state news agency TASS, the third wave was described as “extremely powerful.”
The final tsunami wave damaged key infrastructure in the port area and dragged several anchored ships into the nearby strait. Parts of the town were flooded as a result of the surging waves.
In response to the emergency, local residents—around 2,000 people who live in the Severo-Kurilsk area—were evacuated to a nearby hilltop for safety. Authorities have advised them to remain there until the threat has completely subsided.
Earlier, the initial earthquake also caused structural damage in the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky region, including to a kindergarten building.
Emergency services have begun search, rescue, and relief operations, though no casualties have been reported so far. Tsunami warnings remain in effect for surrounding coastal areas as experts continue to monitor the situation.
Seismologists have called the event a serious warning for the region, urging heightened preparedness for natural disasters in this vulnerable part of Russia.
