Bangladeshi-American Police Officer Didarul Islam Hailed as Hero After Fatal Shooting in New York

Bangladeshi-American police officer Didarul Islam, who was killed in a shooting incident in New York, is being described as a “hero” by U.S. officials. They say he died in the line of duty, performing his role with courage and dedication.

Didarul Islam, 36, was on duty providing security at Park Avenue where a gunman opened fire. He had immigrated to the United States from Bangladesh. He leaves behind two children, while his wife is currently expecting their third child.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams paid tribute to the fallen officer, saying:

“He died doing what he was sworn to do — protecting lives. He gave his life to protect the people of New York.”

In the incident, a female employee of a financial institution and two other civilians were killed. Another individual is currently in critical condition at a hospital.

Officials reported that the suspected shooter, identified as Shane Tamura, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Tamura reportedly suffered from mental health issues, but his exact motive remains unclear.

According to authorities, Tamura initially shot Officer Didarul Islam upon entering the multi-story building on Park Avenue, and then proceeded to injure and kill others.

A note left behind by the gunman suggests that he intended to attack the headquarters of the National Football League (NFL), blaming them for brain injuries related to mental illness. However, officials believe he mistakenly entered the wrong building.

U.S. media reports that Tamura had played football in his youth but never made it to the league.
