A murder case has been filed against around 250 people in connection with the mob lynching of a 40-year-old man in Debhata Upazila under Satkhira district, following allegations of religious defamation. Police have arrested two individuals in connection with the incident, while operations are underway to identify and apprehend others involved.

The victim, identified as Wahiduzzaman Shamim, was the son of the late Shamsur Rahman from Bara Shanta village in Debhata Upazila. According to his family, Shamim held a Kamil degree from a madrasa and completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Jagannath University. He was a father of two children, aged eight years and seven months, and had been undergoing treatment for long-term mental health issues stemming from domestic distress.

The victim’s younger brother, Tausif Rahman Sagar, stated that an audio recording of a domestic argument between Shamim and his wife was recently leaked locally, triggering tension in the area. Amid the escalating conflict, Shamim reportedly consumed poison. On Tuesday afternoon, while he was receiving medical care at a village doctor’s chamber in the Kulia area, a local figure identified as Fazlul Haque Amini allegedly went live on Facebook, accusing Shamim of defaming religion and inciting a crowd to gather.

Sagar recounted that a group of people subsequently stormed the medical chamber and launched a initial physical attack on Shamim. Police rescued him and transported him to a local hospital. However, Sagar alleged that a second attack took place at the hospital around 9:00 PM in the presence of police officers. Shamim was later transferred in critical condition to Satkhira Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Following the incident, the victim’s elder brother, Md. Abdul Jalil Sana, filed a murder case at Debhata Police Station late Thursday night. The lawsuit explicitly names 10 individuals, including Fazlul Haque Amini as the primary accused, along with 240 unidentified persons.

Debhata Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) HM Shaheen confirmed that two suspects were arrested in early morning raids on Friday. The arrested individuals have been identified as Moktar Hossain, 53, from the Subarnabad area, and Asadul Islam Mollya, 46, from the Nazirer Gher area. Both suspects are currently being prepared for presentation before the court.

The police official added that investigators are focusing on the role of primary accused Fazlul Haque Amini regarding allegations that he mobilized the mob via Facebook Live. Authorities have gathered and archived his social media statements, digital evidence, and circulating video recordings. Police are utilizing technology and video footage to identify other participants directly involved in the assault.
