Dhaka Zila Parishad has distributed financial assistance to 1,018 Durga Puja mandaps located across Dhaka district and the Dhaka metropolitan area, according to a press release issued by the local government authority on Thursday.
Under the initiative, direct financial support was handed over to the management committees of 869 mandaps in various upazilas of the district and 149 mandaps in Dhaka city.
A breakdown of the district’s five upazilas shows that grants were distributed to 238 puja mandaps in Savar, 235 in Dhamrai, 201 in Nawabganj, 153 in Keraniganj, and 42 in Dohar. The funding aims to assist in celebrating the festival across both remote rural areas and urban adjacent regions.
A cheque distribution ceremony for the mandaps in Nawabganj and Dohar upazilas was held at the Nawabganj Upazila Parishad premises. The event was presided over by Dhaka Deputy Commissioner (DC) Farida Khanam.
State Minister in charge of Dhaka district Sultan Salauddin Tuku attended the ceremony as the chief guest, while local Member of Parliament Khondokar Abu Ashfaq and Dhaka Zila Parishad Administrator Yasin Ferdous Murad were present as special guests.
Financial grants for puja mandaps in other locations were distributed sequentially, with local public representatives and regional administration officials personally delivering the cheques to committee representatives.
Speaking on the initiative, Dhaka Zila Parishad Administrator Yasin Ferdous Murad stated that grants at the upazila level were provided through Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs). In the metropolitan area, funds were reached directly to mandap committees based on recommendations from local MPs, their representatives, the Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator, and opposition MPs.
Murad noted that the BNP-led government’s election manifesto pledged to maintain religious harmony, ensure the safety and equal rights of people of all faiths, and protect freedom of religious practice. He described the Zila Parishad’s financial distribution as a positive step toward fulfilling that pledge and wished all members of the Hindu community a peaceful, joyous, and safe Durga Puja.
