Only Deep Change Can Prevent the Return of Autocracy

Interim government’s chief adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has warned that without profound structural change, autocracy will inevitably return — no matter how much it is contained on the surface.
He made the remarks on Tuesday afternoon at the Intercontinental Hotel in Dhaka, during a UN-organized event commemorating the July uprising and discussing the implementation of the fact-finding report’s recommendations.
“This is not about surface-level changes or cosmetic reforms,” he said. “Unless we bring about the deepest transformation, the autocracy we are speaking out against today will return again and again. No matter how many laws we pass or reforms we introduce — the reforms we need must go much deeper.”
Professor Yunus urged the nation to learn from the lessons of July and chart a new path forward.
