A teacher and an armed bystander confronted a former student who opened fire inside a special educational needs classroom at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, police officials said. Four people, including three children and a teacher, were killed in the attack before the 16-year-old suspect was fatally shot by the armed parent.

Police identified the suspect as 16-year-old Griffin J John II, a former special educational needs student at the school. Officials reported that the gunman traveled to the school on foot and was carrying a shotgun along with approximately 44 additional rounds of ammunition. He fired up to 15 rounds inside the classroom before being stopped.

During the attack, a female teacher threw her mobile phone at the gunman and tackled him in an attempt to wrest the shotgun from his hands. While she wrestled with the teenager on the classroom floor, an armed bystander entered the building and shot the attacker multiple times, killing him. Police stated the teacher was uninjured and credited her actions with preventing further bloodshed.

The armed bystander was identified by his family as 36-year-old carpenter Kaylub Giamanco, whose two daughters attend the school. Giamanco was driving past the school during lunchtime when he saw the suspect shoot at a vehicle in the parking lot and fire through a window to gain entry. Giamanco retrieved a legally concealed .40-caliber pistol from his vehicle and pursued the gunman inside.

Authorities identified two of the four victims killed in the attack: five-year-old student Rhoam Summer and 25-year-old teacher Meghan Lambert. Lambert’s family released a statement through the police describing her as a compassionate educator dedicated to supporting students with special needs in her hometown district. Summer’s grandfather described him as bright and fun-loving.

The families of the two other deceased students, aged eight and 11, requested that their names not be publicly disclosed at this time. Two additional individuals were injured in the shooting: a 54-year-old teacher who remains hospitalized and a seven-year-old student currently listed in serious but stable condition.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz expressed gratitude to both the teacher and the bystander for their brave intervention during the news conference. Law enforcement agencies executed a search warrant at the suspect’s home as part of an ongoing investigation into how he acquired the firearm and his exact movements. A motive for the shooting has not yet been established.
