Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty described the development at the Wainwright military base as a distressing event and confirmed that casualties had been sustained, though he did not immediately disclose specific figures.

McGuinty stated that all available resources have been mobilized to assist with emergency response operations. He noted that as of Saturday evening, the fire was still raging and required the intervention of multiple fire departments.

The Defence Minister remarked that he could not recall a similar incident occurring in recent years. An investigation into the root cause of the accident is currently underway, with further updates expected in the coming hours and days.

Local authorities reported on social media platforms that strong, gusty winds were accelerating the spread of the flames, causing the fire to extend beyond the perimeter of the military base.

The Wainwright military base is situated approximately 210 kilometers southeast of Edmonton, the provincial capital of Alberta.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his concern in a post on X, formerly Twitter, stating that the federal government is working in close communication and cooperation with provincial authorities in Alberta and local leadership.

Carney added that the government’s thoughts remain with all the brave soldiers and personnel affected by the severe event.
