A powerful earthquake struck eastern Russia, followed by three massive tsunami waves hitting the port town of Severo-Kurilsk, causing significant damage and panic among residents. According to Russia's state news agency TASS, the third wave was described as "extremely powerful."
The final tsunami wave damaged key infrastructure in the port area and dragged several anchored ships into the nearby strait. Parts of the town were flooded as a result of the surging waves.
In response to the emergency, local residentsâaround 2,000 people who live in the Severo-Kurilsk areaâwere evacuated to a nearby hilltop for safety. Authorities have advised them to remain there until the threat has completely subsided.
Earlier, the initial earthquake also caused structural damage in the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky region, including to a kindergarten building.
Emergency services have begun search, rescue, and relief operations, though no casualties have been reported so far. Tsunami warnings remain in effect for surrounding coastal areas as experts continue to monitor the situation.
Seismologists have called the event a serious warning for the region, urging heightened preparedness for natural disasters in this vulnerable part of Russia.

Just hours after claiming that Sheikh Hasina and her associates had committed crimes in Bangladesh more horrific than those of the Pakistani military in 1971, legal adviser Asif Nazrul has expressed regret.
Earlier today (Tuesday), he made the remarks during a discussion and exhibition focused on the July uprising and the demand for justice for killings that took place during that time. His comments triggered a wave of criticism on social media.
At 7:31 PM, Nazrul posted on his personal Facebook profile, saying, âIt was inappropriate to compare the brutality of Sheikh Hasina with that of the Pakistani forces.â He later confirmed to BBC Bangla that the Facebook account belonged to him.
In his post, he wrote:
"Sheikh Hasinaâs brutality is unbelievable. She ordered the burning of the dead and the wounded, the indiscriminate killing of women, teenagers, and children, the gunning down of civilians from helicopters, the execution of young people writhing in death agony, and the denial of medical care in hospitals leading to deliberate deaths."
He further stated that such actions would be considered serious crimes even in the context of war.
"However, it was wrong of me to compare her brutality with that of the Pakistani forces who committed atrocities against the people of Bangladesh in 1971. Both are heinous crimes. For those who thought I was downplaying the genocide of 1971, I sincerely apologize," wrote Professor Nazrul.

Local hospitals report that many people were killed by Israeli airstrikes and gunfire while seeking humanitarian aid.
Al-Awda Hospital in the central Nuseirat area reported that at least 30 people were killed overnight and in morning attacks on residential homes. Among the victims were 14 women and 12 children.
At least 14 people were killed near a relief distribution center, and more than 100 others were injured.
In the coastal area of Al-Mawasi, four people were killed overnight in a tent where aid was being distributed. Israeli forces had reportedly paused attacks in the area for 10 hours during the day to facilitate aid delivery.
Hospital sources and eyewitnesses stated that nine more people were killed in Khan Younis. Al-Shifa Hospital reported this morning that two people were killed in a missile strike on an apartment building in Gaza City.
In a separate attack, five members of a single family were killed. Another strike has made it difficult for rescue workers to reach the wounded and recover the dead.
The BBC has requested information from the Israeli military regarding the casualty numbers but has not yet received a response.

BBC correspondent Harry Farley reports that no cabinet ministers were seen walking into the meeting, suggesting that many may be attending virtually via technology.
The absence of some ministers in person may come as a relief to Prime Minister Starmer, as several of them have urged him to change his position and officially recognize Palestine as a state.
These ministers argue that such recognition would be largely symbolic but morally significant, sending a powerful message on the international stage.
However, the government's official stance remains that recognition of Palestine should only occur at a time when it would have the most impact as part of a broader peace process. The UK wants the decision to be made strategically, in a way that supports sustainable peace and a long-term solution.

Bangladeshi-American police officer Didarul Islam, who was killed in a shooting incident in New York, is being described as a "hero" by U.S. officials. They say he died in the line of duty, performing his role with courage and dedication.
Didarul Islam, 36, was on duty providing security at Park Avenue where a gunman opened fire. He had immigrated to the United States from Bangladesh. He leaves behind two children, while his wife is currently expecting their third child.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams paid tribute to the fallen officer, saying:
âHe died doing what he was sworn to do â protecting lives. He gave his life to protect the people of New York.â
In the incident, a female employee of a financial institution and two other civilians were killed. Another individual is currently in critical condition at a hospital.
Officials reported that the suspected shooter, identified as Shane Tamura, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Tamura reportedly suffered from mental health issues, but his exact motive remains unclear.
According to authorities, Tamura initially shot Officer Didarul Islam upon entering the multi-story building on Park Avenue, and then proceeded to injure and kill others.
A note left behind by the gunman suggests that he intended to attack the headquarters of the National Football League (NFL), blaming them for brain injuries related to mental illness. However, officials believe he mistakenly entered the wrong building.
U.S. media reports that Tamura had played football in his youth but never made it to the league.

Delowar Hossain Mahdi: "Ever since I lost my brother, it feels like every single day is July for us" â said Sanjida, the younger sister of Shaheed Imran, her voice choked with tears. Her words pierce the heart like thorns.
Shaheed Imran, aged 21, had recently returned from Saudi Arabia. He was a resident of Charlohania Dakshinpara in the Fardabad Union of Bancharampur Upazila in Brahmanbaria. His father, Md. Alam, worked as a cook in Dhonia, Jatrabari. Despite the hardships, he lived in a rented house with his wife, one son, and two daughters. Life was tough, but Imran had become the family's hope and strength. After returning from abroad just seven months earlier, it felt like a new light had been lit in their home.
But the evening of 17 July changed everything.
That day, Imranâs mother cooked his favorite meat and tea with her own hands. She kept calling him lovingly, âCome, my son, your food is ready.â But suddenly, gunshots and chaos broke out outside. Fearfully, his mother pleaded with him not to go out. But perhaps fate had already written its verdict. Imran, who had been lying down, got up â said nothing â and walked out.
His mother and younger sister Sanjida rushed out searching for him and eventually found him. He was still alive. His mother pleaded again and again, âCome back, my son, nothing will happen.â His eyes were filled with uncertainty. But he didnât return.
After Maghrib prayers, a neighbor came running, âGo and see what your son is doing.â The mother couldnât hold herself anymore. Like someone possessed, she ran. Then she heard: her only son had been shot.
Imran was first taken to Desh Bangla Hospital in Dhonia, and later to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The doctors said a bullet had entered the right side of his head and exited from the left â his skull had shattered, and his brain was severely damaged. After arranging seven bags of blood, an operation was done, and he was put in ICU. But nothing could save him.
On the night of 18 July, at 8 PM, Imran bid farewell to the world forever. Though the hospital preserved his body in a freezer, it couldnât be handed over to the family without police permission. When they went to Jatrabari police station, officers refused to sign, citing âbusyness.â Finally, Shahbagh police station gave the necessary approval.
Imran returned home for the last time â in silence, lifeless. The hospital had instructed the burial be completed within an hour due to the condition of the body. But people from the neighborhood and surrounding areas gathered to say goodbye. After much difficulty, a funeral prayer was held, and Imran was laid to rest in Jurain Cemetery, forever.
Imran's mother said, âAfter Shaheed Abu Sayeed, my son was the second martyr. No other injured person had reached the hospital at that time, so the doctors tried their best. But we couldn't save him.â
She added, âWe received support from many places, including the July Foundation. But the love, the companionship a son gives â can that ever be replaced?â
When his younger sister Sanjida said, âMy brother is no more,â it felt as if a thousand cries, sorrows, and heartbreaks were hidden in that one sentence. She continued, âOur father passed away just two months ago due to cancer. My brother was the only earning member. Now, for us, every single day feels like July.â
Just like every martyrâs story is one of pain, Imranâs family's story reflects a household consumed by loss. His death doesnât just wound one family â it questions society itself.
